Caring for your wool bedding
Natural wool needs very little care. Give it air, turn it now and then, and deal with spills quickly. That is most of it.
The short version is below. The owner's reference further down has every detail, for when you need it.
Why owners find wool easy
-
Air is the main care
Wool takes up moisture and lets it go again, so it needs air around it. A slatted bed base provides that air from below.
-
Made to settle, filled to allow for it
In its first months, the wool settles by about 10–15%. We overfill every mattress to allow for this, so it settles into its final, supportive feel.
-
Made to be maintained
A zipper on the side gives access to the wool filling. Years from now, you can top it up or adjust it, instead of replacing the mattress.
-
Certified materials, inside and out
Our wool filling, linen and wool fabrics are certified to OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100. Our organic cotton is GOTS certified. No foam, latex, springs or glue.
-
5-year warranty
Covers defects in materials and workmanship under normal use and care. Made to order in our own workshop in Bulgaria.
-

Owner's reference
Mattresses, toppers and futons
When it arrives. Unpack it and let it lie flat in a dry, airy room for a day. A mild, natural wool scent is normal. It fades with airing.
Settling. In its first months, the wool settles by about 10–15% in thickness. We overfill every mattress to allow for this. Once settled, it feels a little firmer and stays that way.
Turning. For the first three months, rotate it head to foot every two weeks, and flip it over. After that, once a month is enough. For large sizes, ask a second person to help.
Using the zipper. The zipper on the front side wall opens to the wool filling, not the cover. The cover stays on. Over the years, you can use it to top up the wool, or to move wool into an area that feels lower.
Base. Use slats with gaps no wider than 5 cm (2 in), or a solid platform. On a solid platform or the floor, stand the mattress up for a few hours about once a week so the underside can air.
Cleaning. The cover is sewn on and is not machine washed. Vacuum the surface monthly with an upholstery nozzle without a rotating brush. A breathable protector or a removable cover keeps it clean.
Spills and accidents
Wool resists stains well, but act quickly.
1. Blot, do not rub. Press a clean, dry towel on the spot to lift as much liquid as you can.
2. Dab with a cloth dampened with cool water and a little wool detergent. Work from the edge inward.
3. Blot again with a dry towel. Repeat until nothing more comes out.
4. Let it dry fully with good airflow. Stand the mattress on its side and use a fan. Do not use direct heat.
Do not use bleach of any kind (including oxygen bleach and hydrogen peroxide), enzyme or bio cleaners (including enzyme pet-stain sprays), or hot water.
If a large spill soaks deep into the wool, contact us the same day. We will help you dry it.
Washing removable items
Wool items (protectors, removable wool covers, pillow cover, blanket): use the wool or hand-wash cycle at 30 °C or below. Use a wool detergent without enzymes or bleach. Fill the drum no more than one third. Use the lowest spin. Reshape and dry flat, away from direct heat and strong sun. Do not tumble dry. Fabric softener is not needed.
Linen and cotton (sheets, duvet cover, removable linen or cotton covers): follow the care label. Do not use chlorine bleach. Natural fabrics can shrink slightly in the first wash.
Pillow: open the zipper, take out the wool, and wash only the cover. Air the wool in the shade.
Pet bed: remove the filling before you wash the cover, or use our optional slip cover, which you can wash without removing the filling.
Never machine wash mattresses, toppers, futons, duvet inserts or loose wool filling. Our wool is untreated (not superwash), so it keeps its natural loft and breathability, and it would felt in a washing machine. Do not dry-clean these items.
Product notes
Split Wool Mattress: the sections join with connecting zippers. Rotate each section on its own. Keep the zippers closed when in use.
Foldable mattress and futon: unfold it for sleeping so the wool can air. Do not fold it straight after waking. Air it first. The optional sofa cover is removable for washing.
Topper: keep the straps snug so it does not shift. Rotate it when you rotate the mattress.
IKEA extendable bed mattress: rotate the pieces regularly so they settle evenly.
Duvet insert: shake it out and air it on a dry day. Always use a duvet cover. Spot-clean only.
Papasan cushion: plump it up and turn it often. Spot-clean only.
Nursery
Use only a tightly fitted sheet on the crib mattress for babies under 12 months.
Care for the crib mattress as for an adult mattress: air it, turn it, and spot-clean spills straight away. Follow the steps in Spills and accidents, and let it dry fully before your baby sleeps on it again. Use a second mattress or a travel cot while it dries.
Storage and moving
Storing. Store wool clean and completely dry, in a sealed bag or a closed cotton bag, in a dry room. Do not compress it hard for long periods.
Moving. Keep the mattress flat or on its side, wrapped to keep it clean and dry.
Moths. Moth larvae feed on wool in dark, undisturbed places. Bedding in daily use and vacuumed monthly is a poor home for them. For storage, keep wool clean, dry and sealed. If you ever see larvae, contact us. Small items can be sealed in a bag and frozen at −18 °C (0 °F) for at least two weeks.
If something feels different
- Firmer or thinner after a few weeks: this is normal settling. Keep turning it as described above.
- A low area: rotate the mattress. If it stays, use the zipper to move wool into that area.
- Small lumps: smooth the wool by hand through the zipper.
- Natural wool scent: normal at first. It fades with airing.
- Damp or musty underside: the mattress needs more air from below. Stand it on its side in a dry room, check your base, and keep room humidity below 60%. Contact us.
- Loose tuft or zipper problem: contact us. Defects are covered by our warranty.

Questions
Something else on your mind? Email us at contact@woollux.com.
Can I wash the mattress?
No. The cover is sewn on and hand-tufted, so it stays on. A washable protector or a removable cover keeps the mattress clean. Spot-clean any spills, and vacuum it monthly.
Will the mattress change over time?
Yes, a little. In its first months, the wool settles by about 10–15%, and the mattress then feels slightly firmer. We overfill every mattress to allow for this. Turning it regularly helps it settle evenly.
Can I adjust it later?
Yes. A zipper on the side gives access to the wool filling. Over the years, you can top it up or move wool where it is needed. Contact us first, and we will advise you.
What kind of bed base do I need?
A slatted base with gaps no wider than 5 cm (2 in), or a solid platform. On a solid platform or the floor, stand the mattress up for a few hours about once a week so it can air.
Will wool make me itch?
The wool filling sits inside a fabric cover and under your sheet, so it does not touch your skin. A 2017 dermatology review found no evidence that wool fibre is a skin allergen. Any prickle comes from coarse fibres touching the skin. If you are unsure, order a sample first.
Does it smell of sheep?
A new mattress can have a mild, natural wool scent. We add no fragrance. The scent fades with airing in the first weeks.
How heavy is a wool mattress?
Wool mattresses are dense and heavier than foam. Smaller sizes are easy for one person to turn. For large sizes, ask a second person to help.
What if it does not suit me?
Standard sizes can be returned within 30 days. Custom sizes cannot be returned. To check the feel first, order a 40×40 cm sample. Its price is credited to your first order.
